Rodopi

Ruined Byzantine walls, the church of Our Lady on the site of its Byzantine predecessor, the old town, the mosque, the old marketplace, the lovely park. Traditional and contemporary side by side in Komotini, the prefectural capital.
A visit to the Archaelogical Museum. A rich collection of exhibits opens a window onto the Thrace of yesteryear. Neolithic Parademe, Abdera, Stryme, Dikaia, Maroneia, Mesimvria, Plotinopolis – show glimpses of their past lives, art, and religion through clay, gold, and marble starting from four thousand years before Christ. The more recent picture, a continuum, is on display at the Folk Art Museum.
You’ ll meet forested mountainsides, small ravines, and green valleys on your sojourn. The beehive tomb at Symvola, Anastasioupolis, Maximianoupolis – places difficult to ignore.

And Maroneia, Homer’s Ismaros, a must. Its acropolis, city walls, theatre, house with the mosaics, the old harbour and the quarry make it a huge open-air museum. Near the picturesque village of today is the Maroneia cave of “Cave of the Cyclps”, as the locals call it.But because a trip in Greece without a visit to the sea seems incomplete, head for Ayios Haralambos, Platanitis, the summer resort of Fanari, Arogi and Mesi, where superb beaches on delightful coves backed bya breath-taking red cliffs and small lagoons – sanctuaries for herons and flamingos – are waiting to help you round out your stay.
